about ashley

I received my PhD in Education from Trinity University in Dublin, Ireland. In addition, I have a Master of Arts in Education (M.A. Ed) and a Bachelor of Fine Arts (B.F.A) from the University of New Mexico, where I graduated Magna Cum Laude. I have been in private practice as a learning specialist for 19 years. Before this I worked as a classroom teacher and reading specialist in both American and British curriculums in International Baccalaureate schools in Europe and in the Middle East. I have extensive teaching experience in grades K-12 and through this have culled the best multi-sensorial, child-driven techniques and methods in order to meet each student’s individual needs. These include Understanding By Design, Responsive Classroom, Universal Design for Learning, project-based learning, Wilson Reading Method ®, Lindamood-Bell’s Visualizing and Verbalizing ®, Writers Workshop, Structured Word Inquiry, and Collaborative Problem Solving ®.

A Place To Start

Many parents and educators expressed a desire to make changes in the way that they approached the issue of race with their children and students. I worked with Inlight Institute to put together an anti-racist toolkit for educators and parents. In it, you will find resources for grades k-12, as well as resources for adults who want to educate themselves. In addition, there are multi-level curricular ideas that can be implemented right away.

Educational Philosophy

My approach to teaching is to help learners to feel in charge of their own learning. Oftentimes students feel like they go to school and learning is thrust upon them, not that they are the ones piloting the ship. This isn’t a one-size-fits-all approach.

Classroom Teaching

As a classroom teacher, I’m aware of the challenges of meeting the individual needs of every learner. I use sensitive, research-based classroom management and inclusive education to help all learners feel that they have a place in our classroom community. As a classroom teacher, I also use a team approach. As teachers and parents come together, we create a power team to help students feel supported on their journey. The students are the captains, but we are all the crew there to help them navigate. Link to online teaching portfolio
